One Watch, Two Generations

This watch was given to Ven. Master Dongchu by Hong Kong’s Ven. Master Mingchang, and was later given to Master Sheng Yen, who named it the “two-generation watch” to commemorate the Dharmic affinities that were passed down for two generations.

Commemorative History of the Watch Written by Master Sheng Yen
(original document and enlargement)

“Ven. Master Mingchang of Deer Park Monastery in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong gave this watch to Ven. Master Dongchu in 1966. On December 16, 1977, Ven. Master Dongchu passed away, and the watch was passed on to me, Sheng Yen. I continued to wear it until June of 1992, when it was old and no longer accurate. Now I keep it for memory’s sake. I therefore named it the “two-generation watch.”
