Legacy and Outlook  “The universe may one day perish, yet my vows are eternal.” Master Sheng Yen’s vows have been carried forward by others, ensuring that the teaching of the Buddha will always remain in the world.
Year Events

1930

Born in Jiangsu Province, China.

1943

Becomes a novice at Guangjiao Monastery, Nantong, Jiangsu province.

1947

Begins to study at Jing An Seminary in Shanghai.

1949

Joins the army and arrives in Taiwan from Shanghai by ship during Chinese Civil War.

1956

Writes his first book entitled: Commentary on the Rebuttal of the Comparative Study of Christianity and Buddhism.

1959

Granted permission to be dismissed from the army at the end of the year, effective on January 1st, 1960.

Assumes the position of editor-in-chief for Humanity Magazine.

1960

Re-ordained by Venerable Master Dong Chu, receives the Dharma name “Hui Kong Sheng Yen” .

1961

Begins his six-year solitary retreat at Chaoyuan Monastery in Kaohsiung.

1969

Begins his studies at Rissho University in Tokyo, Japan.

1971

Earns the Master’s degree with thesis paper entitled A Study of the Mahayana Samatha-Vipassana Practice.
